December 7, 1941

We pause on December 7th to remember the fateful attack on Pearl Harbor by the forces of Imperial Japan, the day that thrust The United States into World War II.   For an entire generation of young men in America everything changed on that Sunday in 1941.  At the time,  Red Stahley was a junior at Northeast Catholic High School in Philadelphia.  Within months, he knew that he would be enlisting in the military as soon as he finished high school.

When he decided on the Navy, I’m not certain.  The only thing of which I am certain is that he had made up his mind long before his graduation that he would be entering the service.  Little did he know on that fateful day in 1941 that his PT duties would take him to the Mediterranean and then the South Pacific and that he would see action which would change the course of his life in ways he could never have imagined.
