A Veteran’s Day salute

Rockwell soldier painting

Tuesday, November 11th, is Veteran’s Day and we remember with great gratitude all the men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States military services.  Our debt to those who have served is immeasurable and on Veteran’s Day we honor their service, their courage, and their dedication.  In a special way, we give thanks for those veterans who made the supreme sacrifice on behalf of our nation.

I came across this Norman Rockwell painting which seems to capture–in a very unusual way–the spirit of Veteran’s Day. It pictures a soldier visiting his mother at home and doing a bit of KP to assist her in preparing the family dinner.  The quiet, contented smile on their faces reflect the immense joy and gratitude that both mother and son feel for the opportunity to spend time together during the turbulent days of WWII.  The worries and fears can be put aside for a brief period and the simple comforts of home can be savored.

We will soon celebrate Thanksgiving and Veteran’s Day is the perfect prelude to our great national holiday of gratitude for our countless blessings.  So, we offer a hearty word of thanks to all our veterans–living and deceased–for what they have done for us all.
