Ron 15 Communications Team, 1944

Ron 15 Communications Team, 1944

A photo I came across through the large and active network of PT Splinters (descendants of PT sailors) offered tantalizing possibilities for finding a familiar face but, so far, no luck. These PT officers and enlisted men were communication specialists in Squadron (Ron) 15 serving in the Med in the summer of 1944. The military records I have indicated that Red Stahley reported for duty as a radioman with Ron 15 sometime during the summer of ’44. I searched eagerly for his face in this photo, and I looked for his buddy Tom Saffles, also. Both Red and Tom spent time in North Africa and on PT bases in the Mediterranean during that critical summer of 1944. The chances are good that several of these sailors knew Red and Tom; perhaps they even mentored them and “showed them the ropes.” Here’s hoping that someone out in cyberspace will find a familiar face and make a connection. In any event, these are the faces of the men who did such courageous and important work in securing the Allied victory in Europe in 1944. What a privilege to honor their memory.
