Red Stahley to Ron 40

The crew of PT 589

The crew of PT 589

After the cessation of hostilities in 1945, Red Stahley still had six months remaining to serve the Navy. As a member of the Naval reserve (USNR), his commitment to Uncle Sam was for the duration of hostilities plus six months. Red and Tom Saffles were assigned to Squadron (Ron) 40 and Red was the radioman for PT 589. In this photo, my father is standing, 5th from the left. Looking at the photo, it’s hard for me to believe that he was still more than four months away from his 21st birthday. How much he had seen and experienced before he was even of legal drinking age in the States.

This photo was sent to me by Richard Cardwell who served as a PT officer in Squadron 27. He lives in Richmond, Virginia. I am deeply grateful for his kindness in sending this photograph; it is a real treasure.
