Happy Memorial Day

Burial at sea

Burial at sea

In another of the stunning entries from Steichen at War, this photograph of Barrett Gallagher shows sailors on the USS Intrepid holding a burial at sea for the officers and men of the USS Intrepid who lost their lives during the battle for Leyte Gulf in the Philippines in November of 1944.

This is a stark reminder of the debt we all owe to those who have died in the service of our country. We pause on this solemn holiday to remember the sacrifices made by the men and women who have worn the uniform of our country and paid the ultimate price for the freedoms we know as American citizens.

  1. All gave some……Some gave all. Thank you Steve for helping people remember.

    • Gary,
Thanks for your good words and thanks for your ongoing support. The more I learn about the PT sailors, the stronger grows my admiration, respect, and awe for all they accomplished.
      Steve
